Trinity Lake near Lewiston, CA is actually a reservoir: the third largest in California. This manmade lake’s shoreline spans 145 miles within the Trinity Forest. It attracts hunters, fishers, skiers and houseboaters year-round. If you can’t get enough of nature or just want a serene getaway, consider visiting Trinity Lake.

Here are some of our favorite Trinity Lake facts:

  • Central Valley Project: Trinity Lake gathers and distributes water for the Central Valley Project, which is used for irrigation and hydroelectricity.
  • Clair Engle: The lake was briefly named after local senator Clair Engle after his death in 1964, but the name never caught on.
  • There’s gold in those hills: Trinity Lake and the dam were created over a century after Weaverville was founded as a Gold Rush boom town.

Hunting and fishing

If you love to fish, Trinity Lake is home to smallmouth and largemouth bass, rainbow and brown trout, brown bullhead, kokanee salmon and white catfish. Several famed fishing competitions take place on the lake each year. Hunting is popular, too—deer are abundant in the Trinity Forest area.

If you prefer to simply observe nature, you’ll have plenty of opportunity here. Bear, deer, ducks, eagles, osprey and more wildlife have been known to appear around the miles of shoreline and in the hidden alcoves on the lake.

Boating

Of course, since we’re a marina, we’re partial to boating. The calm, glassy water is ideal for waterskiing and houseboating. Since the lake is so large, it’s easy to spread out and enjoy the water without fear of congestion or collision. The inlets and coves are ideal for protecting your boat against the wind.

Please note that the spring driftwood can create a hazard, and often the lake’s water level is significantly lower by the end of the season. If you have questions about the best times to visit and what kind of vacation boat rentals we can provide, don’t hesitate to contact Trinity Alps Marina today.

Other activities

There is also an abundance of other activities you can enjoy while you’re at Trinity Lake. Shoreline camping is a treat, as well as boat-in camping locations. Try gold panning to discover the precious metal even today. Kayaking and river rafting are popular on the nearby Trinity River.

When it’s time to leave the lake and branch out, visit our convenient location in Lewiston for food, gas and other important supplies—or drive 45 minutes southeast to Redding, CA, which has plenty of food, lodging and entertainment options to enhance your vacation.
