Boating is a fantastic way to spend time with friends and family. The only downside is that it’s not something you can do in any weather, at any time. Being out on the water in unfavorable weather conditions can lead to serious injuries or even death. Continue reading to learn more about good and bad boating weather in Lewiston, CA:

  • Thunderstorms and lightning strikes: The middle of the lake is quite possibly the worst place to be in the middle of a thunderstorm, as a lightning strike on the water can be deadly. Keep an eye on the horizon for any tall, dark clouds and start heading back to the marina as soon as possible.
  • Rain: Boating in the rain in Lewiston, CA isn’t as serious as boating in the middle of a storm, but it’s important to keep in mind that a rain shower can quickly turn into a thunderstorm. Our advice is to head back to shore as soon as it starts raining to avoid getting caught in a sticky situation.
  • High winds: Whipping winds can make for an uncomfortable day on the lake. If the wind starts picking up, make sure everyone on the boat is wearing a life jacket. Strong winds create choppy water, which means things on the boat are about to get a little iffy. It’s not a bad idea to call it a day and head back to shore if the winds are strong and the lake is choppy.
  • Strong currents: This one is more of a concern for boating on the ocean, but rough waters are a concern for all boaters (especially inexperienced ones). When the water gets choppy, drive slowly and make sure everyone is sitting down and wearing a life jacket.

Avoiding bad weather

Now that you know about nasty boating weather, it’s time to learn how you can avoid it:

  • Check the forecast: This one can’t be overemphasized. Check the forecast early and often before your big day on the lake. Keep an eye on the hourly weather forecast, and consider calling off the excursion if the weather looks like it’s going to be rough. The last thing you want is to be stuck out on the lake in the middle of a storm!
  • Turn on the radio: We know that you want to listen to music when you’re on the water, which is why all of our boats come equipped with a radio. Instead of listening to your favorite tunes the whole time, take a moment every once in a while to turn on an AM channel and listen to the weather report. If there’s any mention of a storm, it’s a good idea to head back to shore.
  • Scan the horizon: You don’t always need the radio to tell you that the weather is about to get dicey! Keep an eye out for dark, ominous clouds that look like they could be rain clouds. Again, it’s a good idea to turn the boat around and start heading back in if the sky gets dark.
